TREKKING
The three mountain ranges in Himachal Pradesh run from north-west to North-east and are more or less parallel to each other enclosing in them various beautiful valleys with insolated cultures. The highest range is Zanskar range which separates us from Ladakh and in the Northern most is the basin of river Chenab which is famous in the plains of Punjab for love, folklore. The second highest is Pir Panjal which originates from J&K and is the exclusive source of two rivers, Beas and Ravi. The last, lowest and smallest is Dhauladhar at the foot of which lie hill stations like Dalhousie, Dharamsala and Palampur.
Himachal Pradesh has its own Mountaineering Institute located at Manali where the training facilities for Basic and Advance climbing are available both for Indian nationals and foreigners. This institute also conducts other adventurous sports activities like high altitude trekking, minor mountaineering, rock climbing, skiing and high altitude rescue and relief courses.
Manali has been described by many climbers of repute as Chamonix of India as it is unique among "Indian hill Stations" is being close enough to real mountains to give comparatively easy access to them.
As this is the area, which is open to foreigners, it has become very popular among the climbers from America, European countries and Japan because at a very close distance from Manali there are peaks-Indrasan (6220m), Deo Tibba (6001 m), Hanuman Tibba (Solang Weiss horn) (5930m), Maker Beh (6035m) and Shiker Beh (6165m). All these peaks have been frequently visited by small, large and mixed expeditions.
Because of increasing popularlity of this hill station all provisions can be purchased locally on moderate rates, high altitude and climbing equipment can also be hired from the Mountaineering Institute. Porters and high altitude guides are becoming costlier. Because of the non¬availability of porters, both low and high altitude, on short notice and due to their high rates some times the expeditions are stranded for days together. It is therefore, necessary that expeditions coming to this area must travel very light so as to engage the minimum number of porters, to save time. It is, therefore, suggested that all such expeditions, both Indian and foreign, coming to this area should inform the Institute or Trekking Agents well in time as equipment and porters can be arranged in advance.
As the prohibited area is also closeby, the foreigners climbing on their own are likely to stray into prohibited area which can result in other complications. It is necessary that the approved high altitude guides be hired through the Institute which has fixed rates both for low and high altitude porters.
In this area skiing can be done from middle of December to the end of June before the on-set of rainy season. Some equipments and skies are available at the Institute but skiers are advised to bring their own skies and other equipment for the sport. Regular coaching in skiing has also been introduced. It has slopes of various gradients and of various lengths from 0.5 to 10 km.
Season :
Generally, the best months for trekking are from early April to middle of June, and mid-September to mid-October. In October, it starts getting cold and in the upper reaches, it is difficult to trek, though in and around Dharamsala and Chamba the season extends somewhat longer. For the Lahaul valley one has to wait till the Rohtang pass opens and Lahaul is not as monsoon prone as rest of the state so one can trek there in July as well.
